Need some reassurance sometimes? Looking for some advice? Well, look no further than the stars above, they seem to speak more than most. For centuries, the people before us have been watching the stars and listening to what they say. From stars and astrology come zodiac signs. Zodiac signs have been a popular belief in many cultures. There’s the Chinese zodiac signs, the Aztecs, the Mayans, but the most popular are the Greek signs and horoscopes. In the last year, horoscopes and zodiac signs have blown up on the internet. Horoscopes are basically a glimpse into oneself and why someone is the way they are. Horoscopes are based on people born between specific dates. From love advice to fashion to compatibility, the stars can basically tell someone anything they don’t know about themselves.
Since horoscopes have became more popular in the media, it’s been debated whether they are fact or fiction. A poll on Antioch High School students showed that about 56% of students actively read and believe their horoscopes. Jasper David, a horoscope enthusiast, shares his point of view on the debate.
“I usually base it off of the people I know. I also am a Wiccan so it is part of what I believe,” David said. “Sometimes I do think, ‘oh my best friend’s a Gemini and I don’t know how this is gonna work,’ because one of my past friends was a Gemini and it didn’t work.”
Although there seems to a large amount of people who seem to live by this, not everyone is so convinced. Sophomore Rusty McQueen has a different take on zodiac signs.
“Well, when you think of it, it’s like religion and religion is something that’s based off belief, so I think zodiac signs, for example, are just a belief or a guide for other people to follow to make them a better person,” McQueen explains. “When I was a little kid I was always into that kind of stuff. I always read books about it. I found it really interesting, but never really believed it.”
Although there will never be a definite answer, there’s no denying that there’s some comfort in thinking the stars are looking out. After all, humans are made of stardust. The ideas from astrology have helped civilizations for centuries. The stars have helped ancestors farm, helped them navigate and overall, the stars make a beautiful sky and will continue to influence lives and society. There’s no harm in being able to read about oneself or a friend, especially when everything is just a click away.
