In a decade the students who walk the halls will be in different places with different stories following them. The question is, what will those stories contain? Everyone has different plans after high school, plans that will hopefully be accomplished.
Even the most successful have to begin somewhere. Assistant Principal of Student Services Omar Rodriguez faced several obstacles before reaching success. “Statistically I shouldn’t be here,” said Rodriguez in his opening address at the annual class meetings. “Initially I really didn’t know what it was that I wanted to do. Throughout the majority of my educational experience I didn’t necessarily see myself in college.”
Rodriguez’s story can resonate with many students who feel they just can’t make it. He was once a confused high school student, and
now came out on top against all odds.
“I am at-risk left and right. My mom is a single parent I am a Latino male immigrant from another country. English was not my first language, and in a lot of contexts, and just my background in general, my mom and I were not that well off growing up. So statistically speaking, I think I had a lot of strikes against me. My feeling is that it is your desire to succeed that is ultimately going to make the difference,” said Rodriguez.
His plan contained one main goal: not to upset his mother.
“My biggest fear was letting my mom down and my motivation was to make all the sacrifices that she made for me pay off,” said Rodriguez. “If I were still in school I could see myself in a little trouble, but I could also see myself still going to college.”
As for junior Jatiyah Childs, her story is only a dream waiting to become a reality. “In 10 years I see myself graduated from college, and living a successful life, and I also see myself having a steady career. My inspiration would be my family, I just want to see them happy and know that I didn’t upset them,” said Childs. “My goals should be easy to accomplish as long as I work for it.”
Goals can only be achieved if we have the mind set mentality to strive for nothing but the best.
