Antioch Community High School hired a few new teachers, such as AP Human Geography and Global Studies teacher Jennifer Joyce. The previous teacher, Stephen Rose, became a tech coach when the school went one to one. Joyce has also student taught at ACHS in the spring of the previous school year.  

Joyce graduated from Lake Forest College with a double major in education and history, and a minor in psychology. Joyce didn’t know right away that she wanted to be a history teacher but she had known since she was little that she wanted to go into the education field.

“I always loved school [and] I loved helping others,” Joyce said. “When I was little, I used to play with my stuffed animals and teach them things. It was always something I enjoyed doing.”

She wants to make sure that her classes are engaging and fun for all of her students. Joyce encourages her students to participate during note taking to ensure they are fully understanding the information.  

Freshman Tyler Cook is currently enrolled in one of her AP Human Geography classes.

“A lot of her class is pretty upbeat,” Cook said. “She helps us with the notes and walks us through what we should be looking for. [She] tries to allow us to be better.”

So far Joyce has had an enjoyable time at ACHS meeting new people and teaching her students. Over the first few months of school, she has already developed familiar relationships with them.

“[The students] are very friendly and they said that they enjoy my class and they like how I teach,” Joyce said. “It just warms my heart that they enjoy the class and that they’re learning.”

As a new teacher, her goal is to make sure her students know that they are cared for and to make sure that they leave the class knowing things they didn’t know before.
