Sequoit Sports Weekend Recap: Jan. 22-24
A busy weekend for the Sequoits meant qualifying for state, a comeback win and extending a winning record.
Winter sports are certainly in full swing for the Sequoits, with the weekend of January 22 being a huge time for sports and Sequoit pride from all community members.
On Friday, January 22, Antioch hosted a wrestling meet against Grant and a boys basketball game against Vernon Hills. The wrestling team unfortunately did not come out ahead of Grant at this meet, but the boys remain optimistic as they head into their regional meet on Saturday February 6.
For boys basketball, the Sequoits were able to get a win over the Vernon Hills Cougars in a tight game, despite the injuries of a few key players. Being down 22-15 at halftime, the boys came back in the second half with full strength and motivation to win, ending the game with a final score of 54-45 Sequoits.
“As a team, we played really well together and just got better at getting good shots,” said junior Reece Eldridge. “We just came together as a complete team to get the win.”
On Saturday, January 23, the dance team traveled to Rolling Meadows High School for their sectional competition. After a perfect performance from the whole team, the team received 4th place in their division, allowing them to move onto the IHSA state competition this upcoming Friday.
“We were all extremely proud of each other for nailing everything,” said freshman Casey Kiyohara. “My team’s great feedback on my personal performance gives me a positive energy when I dance, and I cannot wait to take on state with my amazing team.”
The girls basketball team played at North Chicago Saturday night, beating the Warhawks with a final score of 79-33. The Lady Sequoits continue with a winning record to take on the Lakes Eagles this Friday, January 29, at Lakes.
On Sunday January 24, Lakes hosted the North Suburban Cheer Conference for the JV and varsity teams at Antioch. The Lady Sequoits did not place in the top three teams in the NSC Prairie division, with Grant taking the Prairie Division title and Stevenson taking the Lake Division and NSC championship for the competition. Sophomore Chloe Grass was named a member of the All-Conference sportsmanship cheer team.
