One of the unique things about colleges is that they offer a much wider variety of course options than available in high school. Most colleges offer thousands of courses, ranging from typical courses to some offbeat courses.
For students interested in the supernatural many colleges offer courses in various supernatural beings. According to US News, the University of Pittsburgh offers a course entitled “Vampires: Blood and Empire”. In this course, students can learn all about vampirism and the lore surrounding it. Zombie courses are also top-rated, with a variety of colleges such as Saint Xavier University, having several classes about zombies or zombie apocalypses. These courses both explore the supernatural and how it relates to everyday life.
For pop culture fanatics, many universities offer various courses on everything from popular music to T.V. and movies. According to my options.org, Harry Potter fans can take a class titled “Harry Potter Studies” at the University of Central Florida. This course allows students to dive deep into J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter novels and be sorted into one of the four houses. UCF is not the only college to offer a Harry Potter course, Frottsburg University also offers a Harry Potter course entitled “The Science and Sociology of Harry Potter” in which students explore the various societal issues brought up in the books. For Taylor Swift fans, Stanford University offers All Too Well (ten-week version) in which students immerse themselves and analyze Taylor Swift’s song “All Too Well”. According to College Cliffs Star Trek fans can take The Physics of Star Trek in which students explore the world of Physics through Star Trek offered at The University of Santa Clara. For Jurassic Park fans, the University of Maryland offers a class called “The Biology of Jurassic Park” which explores the ecology and biology of the movie franchise.
Other off-beat courses include the University of California’s “#Selfie” class in which students discover themselves and how they are perceived through the digital medium of selfies. The New York Institute of Fashion offers a class specific to people who want to learn how to make dog garments. The University of Pennsylvania even offers a class called “How To Waste Time On The Internet” in which students waste time.
Overall, colleges and universities offer thousands of unique courses and there is something for everyone and a class for every niche.
