Varsity Profile: Patrick Schoenfelder
Schoenfelder is a veteran when it comes to big wrestling matches, but his mindset is a bit different this year.
Antioch wrestling is very familiar with regionals, sectionals and state. With sectionals this coming weekend, Senior Patrick Schoenfelder is beginning his mental preparation.
“[My mindset is] to take it one match at a time,” Schoenfelder said. “It’s not going to be easy, but I know I can get it done. I obviously have bigger goals than sectionals”.
Schoenfelder has been a very talented wrestler since his first match. When an opponent faces Schoenfelder, the gym becomes silent to watch Schoenfelder perform his magic. Although he is one of the best, he has still lost a few matches, but Schonfelder takes losses differently than most.
“It stinks that I am not undefeated,” Schoenfelder said. “[But] those losses are positives. I had a confidence loss in the middle of the season, but that taught me what I needed to improve on and to keep pushing myself to become a better athlete.”
With the season quickly coming to an end for most, Schoenfelder has his eyes on the big prize. Schoenfelder wrestles this weekend for sectionals and his fourth chance to make a run for state champion. He knows better than others that hard work and dedication will pay off and can possibly even reward him with a championship.
