Underground Artist: Saba

Chicago did it again. The city’s rap scene thrusted another extremely talented artist into the limelight.

Tahj Chandler, otherwise known as Saba, grew up in a family influenced by music. Saba’s father exposed him to soul, jazz and R&B, and at a young age he learned how to play piano. As he grew older, he became interested in the Chicago rap scene.

He performed at multiple local open-mic events, where he met Chance The Rapper. He has collaborated with Chance in songs like “Everybody’s Something” on Chance’s album “Acid Rap” and “SmthnThtIWant” on Chance and The Social Experiment’s album “Surf”.

The stelar vocals created by Saba can draw the interest of any fan of R&B or rap. Saba also has other cards up his sleeve. He created his instrumental mixtape titled “SpareChange!” that he has posted on Soundcloud. They are almost reminiscent of the 80’s Trance movement that used psychedelic synthesizers with a strong back beat. He has recently come back into the public eye with the release of Chance’s single “Angels” and their performance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”. Saba and Chance came out of nowhere with this feel-good track. Saba is another product of the Chicago open-mic movement, and he has left his new fans begging for more.
