Trump’s New Union Address
On February 5, president Donald Trump gave his second State of the Union address.
President Donald Trump started off his State of the Union address on Feb. 5 with his overall goal: to make the United States a safer nation for everyone, as well as to make sure the well-being of Americans is placed first. He stated that this could not be done, however, without cooperation and compromise.
He followed this up by talking about America’s current economic state, saying it is in one of the best states it has ever been in. Unemployment rates in the US have gone down considerably with the creation of new jobs since his inauguration.
Throughout his speech, he referenced stories of many Americans that have gone through or are currently going through hardships. One person he mentioned specifically was Matthew Charles, who was the first person to be released from prison under Trump’s new First Step Act. The purpose of the act is to help nonviolent offenders become hardworking and valued members of society.
Trump then went on to discuss the current immigration situation. He believes there is still a problem with the amount of illegal immigrants coming into the United States from Southern America. He again mentioned the idea of building a wall to help solve the problem. He clarified that he does not want to build one large wall that stretches across the entire southern border, but instead multiple large ones in the areas that seem to have the highest activity of trafficking.
The rest of his speech mainly focused on international relations. He briefly talked about creating a new trade process with China so that America would no longer be at a disadvantage. Trump also discussed his negative standpoint on Kim Jong-un.
The president concluded his speech by assuring that good things are still to come, and that he will continue to work towards creating a better country for the people of America.
“We must always keep faith in America’s destiny,” Trump said during his speech. “That one nation, under God, must be the hope, and the promise, and the light, and the glory among all the nations of the world.”
