Trump Proposes New Budget Guidelines
This past Monday, President Trump presented his proposed budget for the next year.
President Trump’s proposed budget will increase military spending by about 10%. However, other government departments will have sharp cuts in their spending. The State Department and the Environmental Protection Agency are bracing themselves for a large decrease in funding.
Senate Democrats are hard at work trying to stop this from happening. It is believed that cutting the State Department spending will decrease the safety of America.
“Defense hawks”, like budget director Mick Mulvaney, are arguing that the $54 billion increase in defense spending is not enough money after years of military spending being capped.
“It is a true ‘American first Budget,” Mulvaney said in a CNN interview. “It will show the President is keeping his promises and doing exactly what he said he was going to do when he ran for office. It prioritized rebuilding the military, including restoring our nuclear capabilities, protecting the nation and securing the border, enforcing laws currently on the book, taking care of vets and increasing school choice.”
Trump does not want to makes cuts in every executive department, but every dollar that gets cut could affect other programs including transportation, conservation, agriculture and commerce. Each of these programs are ready to defend themselves for their spending.
“We have not been attacked, so why increase the spending of military money?” junior Nathan Cavanaugh said.
“We spend so much money into the military already, and to spend even more on defense when there are so many other problems that we face as a country is not the best management of our money,” junior John Kozlow said. “We already spend the most in the world in military.”
