Take Off for the Sequoits
The Sequoits’ winning streak continues with a 4-0 win over Richmond Burton.
The boys Varsity soccer team kicked off homecoming week with a 4-0 win over the Richmond Burton Rockets Monday afternoon. The Sequoits dominated the game, taking on a 2-0 lead by the end of the first half, while finding the back of the net twice more in the second, earning their third shutout of the season.
“All throughout the game, we were possessing the ball well,” said junior Gabe Tijerina. “We capitalized on many opportunities to find the wingers, who were then able to cross the ball in or get a shot off.”
The Sequoits started off the first half head to head with the Rockets, until gaining control of the game around them. Junior Bart Krumpos, started the scoring streak for the Sequoits, with an unsavable, upper 90 rocket, zipping right past the Richmond Burton goalkeeper not long into the first half. With not much time left in the half, the Sequoits sought out yet another opportunity. Searching for the gap through the Rockets defensive line, the Sequoits shot down the channel, finding the cross into the slot. The Richmond Burton keeper came out, trying to deny the travel of the ball, while senior Cody Matonik crashed the net, hitting the ball right around the goalkeeper; Sequoits finish the half with the 2-0 lead.
“We are a team that does not give up,” said Tijerina. “We fight till the end.”
The second half was in the Sequoits’ hands as they fought to the finish. Late into the second half, junior captain Rolando Vazquez caught flight of the ball, heading the well driven, corner in, putting Antioch up 3-0. It wasn’t long after, when Matonik capitalized on yet another opportunity for the Sequoits. After Richmond Burton gained possession of the ball, the defensive line went for a clearance that got denied by Matonik. After stepping, Matonik got just enough of the ball to rip a shot, keeping the Sequoits up 4-0. The game resulted in a 4-0 win for the Sequoits and the winning streak continues.
