Stepping In

Finding the happy medium between strict and laid back is what students prefer in their substitute teachers.

I think we can all agree that the first question students will ask when they find out that one of their teachers will be gone during the school day is, “So, who’s the sub?”

Substitute teachers come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Like the old, strict and grouchy. Or the laid back, I-dont-care-what-you-do, “Mr. Schneebly” from “School of Rock” substitute.  But characteristic and stereotypes aside, some of these subs can leave an impact in even a short amount of time on students. Some of these substitutes have stepped foot in our very own Antioch Community High School.

“Mr. Linch is a great example of a great substitute. He is awesome and teaches us great life lessons,” said junior Allison Craun.

But the real question is, which of these subs are the most successful for students? The strict ones? The ones who are possibly just trying to keep the students under control in order to abide the teachers given orders?  Or the care-free subs? Ones who simply tell to “do what they need to do.”

“To me, there needs to be a balance. Subs shouldn’t have to be so strict, but at the same time, they can’t be so laid-back to the point where class becomes a free for all for the students.” said junior Ben Dahms.
