Starting School Later In The Morning

Students physical and mental health could possibly benefit with one simple change.

Many students struggle to get up in the morning because they stay up late doing their homework or simply because they can’t fall asleep. Starting school later could help some students be more focused during the day. However, it could also throw off some student’s sleeping schedules because they would not be used to waking up later as they have woken up early most of their lives.

As students start heading into the future, the later start may make them not as prepared to wake up early for jobs they may want to venture into. Therefore, keeping the start time of the school day the way it is would benefit students in the long run.

“I think we should start at the same time,” sophomore Mia Maldonado said. “Once you get into college or get a job you are going to have to wake up early anyway.”

While this is true, there is more than one side to the story. Many students think that starting school later can help them focus more because they won’t be as tired in class. This can lead to them performing better on tests and classwork while also giving them more time to get homework done because going to bed early wouldn’t be as big of a priority.

“I think school should start later because a lot of students are very tired in the morning, making them unable to learn and retain information,” senior Alexis Yaris said. “Starting later would help students to do better in classes as they would be more awake and ready to learn.”

Starting school at least an hour later can give students an extra hour of sleep at night. Even though one hour doesn’t seem like a lot, it can help students focus and overall make them have a better day.
