Spring Trends: Off-The-Shoulder
A variety of new trends are emerging this season, including off-the-shoulder shirts.
Off-the-shoulder clothing was popular in the early 1800s, with flowy, floral ball gowns and evening dresses. Many women were seen showing off their shoulders and long necks, making it was the trend of the time. Over 100 years later, the off-the-shoulder trend made a comeback, specifically in the 90s. This time around, however, women were dressing down the trend, by wearing t-shirts cut off at the shoulder.
With spring in full swing and summer is just around the corner, the off-the-shoulder trend seems to be coming back stronger than ever. This year, off-the-shoulder is a versatile look and is seen in a wide variety of clothing items ranging from casual t-shirts to prom dresses.
One of the most popular off-the-shoulder shirt styles is that of a loose, peplum top. Flowy, ruffled shirts have been in style forever, and will probably never go out of style. They are flattering on any body type, serving a purpose for everyone. This year, people are finding that the addition of the off-the-shoulder style to flowy shirts is also very flattering.
“I like off-the-shoulder shirts because they are a classy trend,” senior Denae Eldridge said. “It’s a great spin off of a normal t-shirt.”
Off-the-shoulder shirts are great for people who love accessorizing; many people add a choker necklace or a statement necklace to spice things up. Most of the shirts are cut off near or just below the belly button, making them a great pair with high-waisted jeans. Additionally, these tops can be found almost anywhere, but popular sellers include American Eagle and Forever 21. Both stores carry a wide variety of off-the-shoulder shirts, from fun prints for summer, to a more plain, everyday style.
Senior Morgan Balleza likes the off-the-shoulder trends, but there are a few things that annoy her about them.
“I don’t like that you can’t raise your arms in them easily,” Balleza said. “If you aren’t careful, they can slip down really easily.”
In addition to casual t-shirts, the off-the-shoulder trend is being seen in prom dresses. With prom just a few weeks away, many stores are selling dresses with this trend, sometimes in two piece styles and other times as a normal, one piece dress. The off-the-shoulder trend in prom dresses is made complete by adding accessories such as a statement necklace or earnings.
Whether it is incorporated in a classic t-shirt, prom dress or everyday look, the off-the-shoulder trend is becoming more popular every day.
