The girls varsity basketball team started out strong defeating Richmond Burton in the season opener. Juniors Ashley Reiser and Erika Gallimore lead the girls in the 65-44 victory. Overall, Reiser had the most points with 12, but was closely followed by her teammate Gallimore with 11.
“It felt great to get the win , but it’s always a team effort. I could not have scored those points if it weren’t for my teammates. We all played really well as a team, but there is always room for improvement.” said Reiser.
Although, Antioch did not score the first point and was down 17-12 after the first quarter, the team needed to pull themselves together, relax and play their game.
“There were definitely some first game jitters, Before the second quarter we discussed being smarter with the ball with making better decisions on passing and shooting. We were out rebounded in the first quarter, so we knew that we needed to pick up the pace and scramble for every 50/50 ball,” said Reiser.
Playing their game only briefly expresses the girls outstanding performance. By the end of the first half, Antioch was able to take the lead. The Sequoits were up 34-23 going into the third quarter. The lady Sequoits were able to maintain that lead as the baskets kept on coming. Sequoits lead 54-32 by the end of the third.
In the end, the Sequoits walked away with a home victory under their belt with first game jitters cleared from their systems.
