The girls varsity softball team went 4-0 over the weekend of April 20, starting with Thursday night’s game against Grayslake Central.

“I was really excited to play the game because we needed to win in order to get back to the top of the conference,” freshman right fielder Gabrielle Debevec said. “I knew this was our chance to take advantage [at home] and jump on them right away.”

In the first inning, the Sequoits scored one run when senior shortstop Piper Foote doubled. Senior second baseman Abby Pyburn led the Sequoits in their total of 16 hits and went four for four at the plate. Junior pitcher Jerianne Bonaguidi went seven innings, allowing seven runs on nine hits and striking out six.

“This was a big game for us because we knew if we won we would be first in conference and we wanted to put it all out on the field,” sophomore second baseman Quinn Gillespie said. “We came through with our bats and had great hits, driving in a lot of runs against a good team.”

After the team earned their spot as first in conference with a score of 12-7, the next three games in Byron on the Saturday after that, was their next battle. They ended up sweeping the whole tournament and achieved another spot on top.
