The Antioch Community High School wrestling team went toe-to-toe with conference opponent Grant Community High School on Jan. 20. The Sequoits fought hard and were able to come out on top with a final score of 48-30.
“Something our team did well was we had some gaps in our line up but our team managed to get the pins and the six points to get the win,” freshman Gavin Hanrahan said.
Hanrahan was able to win his match, securing a Sequoit win. The Sequoits were in command for almost the entire meet until the end when it got a little tense.
“I feel like there never was a turning point in the meet, we had control almost the entire time but it started slipping at the end,” junior Seth Gomez said. “Despite losing, I was wrestling twenty pounds up and didn’t give up the extra three team points, which helped us secure the win.”
Despite Gomez losing his individual match, he still contributed points to the sequoits to help them win. The same can be said for freshman Ben Vazquez, who won his match and helped seal a victory for the sequoits.
“Individually I think I did well-putting pressure on the opponent and making him very uncomfortable to be close by me and putting him in positions that he is not aware of being in,” Vazquez said. “When he’s uncomfortable, I go from there and do my thing by putting him on his back and pinning him.”
The sky’s the limit for the Antioch Sequoits. The Sequoits have their eyes on the bigger picture, which is making it to sectionals and then hopefully the IHSA state playoffs.
