As soon as kick-off took place, there was no doubt that the Antioch Community High School flag football team would defeat the Jefferson High School J-Hawks. The game on Oct. 8 was a huge team win for the Sequoits, furthering them to the regional championship. Led by freshman Tanner Ludwig and junior Abby Fuesting, the Sequoits secured the win with a score of 28-6.
The Sequoits were ultimately able to pull out the win due to their exceptional teamwork, making sure that they had their teammates’ backs because a win is not possible without everyone pulling their own weight.
“I think we did well at working together today because we really relied on each other this time,” Fuesting said. “Usually we’re kind of out there by ourselves it seems, and today it seemed like we really did work together.”
Fuesting’s teammates could rely on her to carry her weight. Offensively, she scored two touchdowns and made several stops on defense. Having a reliable teammate on both sides of the ball gives the team confidence, which leads to success.
“I think Abby stood out with her defense and offense,” Ludwig said. “She was always on the ball. She was always locked in. She was always cheering on her teammates, and she stood out to me a lot.”
Fuesting and Ludwig left everything on the field against Jefferson, doing everything in their power to take down the J-Hawks. Between Ludwig’s perfect passes and Fuestings’ speed, the Sequoits were unstoppable.
Although the Sequoits played a great game and won, there is always room for improvement. The Sequoits worked hard at practice to achieve their goal of making it to sectionals.
“We have a tough matchup against McHenry coming,” Coach Tammy Johnson said. “So on defense, we definitely need to close down the middle of the field, to rely on our help. As well as offense, we just got to keep on making plays and do that consistently, especially when it comes to all those extra points we lost today.”
The Sequoits made those adjustments, beating McHenry to win the regional championship. Although they fell short of Lakes at sectionals, they had an incredible season. The future of the ACHS flag football team is looking bright.
