After a hard-fought season, the Sequoits girls basketball team fell short at regionals after their loss to Vernon Hills. Despite this, the team had many big successes throughout the season.
During Coach D’Andrea’s first season as a head coach, she was able to bring the team to a final record of 17 wins and 11 losses.
As the season progressed, senior Macie Volkmar, believed that the team had come from starting slow in games to playing hard all four quarters, pushing the team to a positive record. Volkmar had moments of her own that she was proud of specifically in Antioch’s 62-61 win over Woodstock North.
“My proudest moment as an individual this season was my Woodstock game,” Volkmar said. “I had an overall good performance with a season-high of 14 points and rebounding and assisting for my team as well.”
The team also had players with various strengths that created a well-rounded team. Specifically, sophomore Heidi Rathmann was a huge part on the offensive side with her fast play style and strong post moves to get the team many points from inside.
“Heidi Rathmann led the team in scoring, 492 points this season,” D’Andrea said. “She has a knack for getting to the basket, and even with contact in the paint, she was able to score under that pressure.”
Multiple members of the team agree that although flying under the radar to most sophomore Addie Webb made big contributions for the team, Webb was crucial due to her rebounding and overall ability to give her best effort at all points in time.
The team on average outscored opponents 44-42 but this does not truly represent the team’s ability to score, Antioch scorerd 62 points in their highest-scoring game. Nor does this show the team’s ability to play defense withholding opponents to as little of a score as seven points.
Antioch was struck hard with injuries toward the end of the season with key players missing the biggest games. In their final game against the Vernon Hills Cougars, Antioch was missing two of five starters from the lineup due to injury and illness. With all of this, the Sequoits were still able to have a great season with a high outlook for next year.
