Scoring the Cheers
Cheerleading competitions are judged on a lot of things.
Cheerleading is now in their competition season which means they are tasked to create a performance of no longer than three minutes. The scoring system has a lot of different categories, the categories are: entrance, jumps, tumbling, chants, cheer, dance and stunts. Each one of those categories has specific moves that will either help or hurt their score.
The maximum score a team can get in competition is 200 points. The more mistakes that are made, the more the score of the routine goes down. The scoring system is somewhat confusing for people who don’t cheer.
“Yes it is very confusing for people outside of cheerleading because every single thing you do for your routine is being scored,” junior Aubrey Kay said.
There is so much that the judges are looking for in a routine, and what makes cheer unique from many other sports is they only have one shot to hit their routine. There is not another quarter or one more play, either the routine is hit to perfection, or their score drops drastically. Cheer has their first competition is December 11, 2016 at Rockford (Guilford) High School.
