Though both staff and students enjoyed an extra two days of winter break on Jan. 6 and 7, these cancellations may result in schedule changes in the future that are not quite as favored. It could result in final exam days, which are currently scheduled for May 27, 28 and 29, to be pushed back. Administration may also consider changing or removing teacher institute days from the schedule.
Due to a state law, schools must make up the first five days missed due to emergency cancellations. If a school was to exceed this number, it would be able to request that any extra days not have to be reworked into the school schedule. For District 117, this means that an extra two days will need to be added to account for the cancellations.
“These two days off won’t affect whether or not we take an additional day off. Ultimately when we make those decisions, whether it’s with the National Weather Service or the Director of Emergency Services here in Antioch or the other superintendents, student safety is at the forefront of our decision making process. We wouldn’t be doing anybody a service if we were basing it on whether or not we’ve taken previous days, so certainly I don’t believe this will play a part in decision making in the future,” said Principal Bradford Hubbard.
When updates to the schedule are made public, the Tom Tom will share those via Twitter, Facebook and our website. Be sure to check back to see the impact of the two snow days on the second semester schedule.
