Running Out of Time
Boys soccer loses a nail bitter against Grayslake Central.
The Sequoits battled it out against Grayslake Central Tuesday afternoon, coming off of a tough loss by Westosha Central the night before.
Looking to redeem themselves, the boys took their game to another level. However, they were unable to locate the back of the net, concluding in an 1-0 defeat.
“We held up with a great team, and bounced back quickly from the bad loss to Westosha,” junior Thomas Cerney said.
Hearts were pumping, sweat was dripping, and the work ethic shinned prominently throughout the field, as the Sequoits went head to head with the Rams for 90 minutes. With the Rams holding their 7-4-1 record, the Sequoits knew the stakes were high for last night’s game.
Early into the first half, the Rams shot down the channel finding the slot for the their offense to run on to. Pulling the Sequoits’ defensive line out of position, the Rams were able to get a cross off. Finding direct contact with the unmarked, far-post, the Rams were able to get a head on the ball. Without hesitation, senior goalkeeper Alex Ruano got just enough on the ball to perry it around the far post, keeping the game tied at 0-0 for the first half.
“We felt like we needed to prove ourselves and to each other that we could play with one of the best teams in the area,” Cerney said. “We need to play with that intensity every game.”
The intensity was rising, and the desire for a goal scoring opportunity was building each minute that ticked by in the second half. About half way through, the Sequoits had a corner that escalated in the Rams favor. After crossing in the corner, the Rams had a counter attack against the Sequoits defensive line. As the Sequoits trailed to get back, the ball found its way around the last defender leaving a breakaway to Ruano. The Rams were now ahead 1-0, and finished with the win over the Sequoits. Another opportunity will arise for the boys as they face Round Lake High School this Thursday.
