Rising Up Against Marengo
Sequoit boys soccer comes back strong after tough loss with a hatrick from senior Cody Matonik.
The boys Varsity soccer team turned things around, defeating Marengo High School 5-3, Tuesday afternoon, after a tough loss the night before.
“The team wasn’t really feeling well going into the game,” said senior Cody Matonik. “Once we got our heads focused, we did what we were supposed to do, and played smart.”
Struggling to find themselves at the start of the game, Matonik rose to the occasion, putting away his first two goals of the season. Junior Gabe Tijerina followed by finding the back of the net for his first goal of the season as well, putting the Sequoits in the lead 3-0 for the first half. With less than five minutes left in first half, senior goalkeeper Alex Ruano came out big with a breakaway save but the Marengo striker found the rebound making the score 3-1.
Early on into the second half, senior striker Zach Espitia catches a piece of freshman Adam Lynn’s cross, heading it straight past the Marengo goalkeeper, making it 4-1. Not long after, Matonik dribbles through Marengo’s defense, finishing with a hat trick. Sequoits up, 5-1.
“Scoring a hat trick, is every players dream. The amount of pride I feel for myself and my team is truly amazing. Today, I was lucky to achieve that”, said Matonik.
Although the Sequoits held the substantial lead, the Indians fought to the end, putting away two more goals late in the second half. After a heated battle, Antioch came up on top with the 5-3 victory.
