REVIEW: Taylor Swift’s 1989
Taylor Swift’s new album reveals a new style and a more mature collection of tracks.
Pop artist Taylor Swift impressed the music world once again with the release of her fifth studio album, “1989” on Monday, Oct. 27. After the release of Swift’s single “Shake it Off” and the accompanying music video, many Swift fans were skeptical of her new album. Swift’s style of music has been drifting away from country-style music over her past few albums, but with the release of “1989” she has proven she can make the transition from country to pop beautifully.
Swift is known for her catchy beats and relateable lyrics and the tracks on “1989” are no exception to the fact. There are fun, upbeat tunes such as “How You Get The Girl” and “Blank Space” that are sure to have you singing along the whole time. Swift adds her own spin on traditional cookie-cutter pop music with “All You Had To Do Was Stay.”
Swift also shows a new side of maturity with the song “Clean.”
With lyrics like “you’re still all over me like a wine-stained dress I can’t wear anymore,” Swift shows the world she has grown up since her “You Belong With Me” days.
“1989” is different from all of Swift’s previous albums in the fact that each CD comes with a stack of Polaroids of Swift, each one containing handwritten lyrics to her songs. The Polaroids represent all of the “secret messages” on this album. After the release of the album, Swift’s fans quickly realized that all the songs interwoven told a story. Swift’s achievements do not just stop at the release of a fabulous new album showcasing her new style of music; it also broke records in terms of sales. “1989” had the largest sales record of any album during its first week of sales since 2002, selling 1.3 million copies in just seven short days. This achievement also makes Swift the only artist to go platinum in 2014.
With such a list of feats accomplished by Swift in just a week, fans are eager to see what surprises Swift will bring out for her “1989” world tour, kicking off in May 2015. One thing is for sure, “1989” is definitely an album to check out, whether you are belting out the lyrics to a breakup song, or dancing along to one of the fun, upbeat tracks.
