REVIEW: Grease: Live
Fox brings the classic 1978 film back to life with a live production that left few disappointed.
Over 600 people, 21 sets and 20 cameras were involved in the making of “Grease: Live.” It was broadcasted across the nation Jan. 31, at 7/6c on Fox.
The entire show went down almost flawlessly, Julianne Hough (Sandy) and Aaron Tveit (Danny Zuko) had outstanding chemistry and really added to the whole show. The rest of the cast was a powerhouse, it was outstanding. Vanessa Hudgens (Rizzo) was the perfect fit. Her father died of stage four cancer the night before the performance, you would’ve never know by her stellar scene when she sang “There Are Worse Things I Could Do.” Hudgens played the part of Rizzo with courage and confidence and made me think I was watching the original movie.
The camera work was fluid and swift, the cutting between scenes did not seem like something from a live broadcasted performance at all. I felt like I was watching a movie, there was only one technical difficulty that happened during the three hour broadcast. The music cut off for about ten seconds during the “Hand Jive,” but that was the only problem that went noticed.
Right before each commercial break they would give a couple interesting facts about how the show came to life. Something that was surprising was the cast only had 52 days of rehearsal, in perspective a little less than two months. Which is crazy considering how well the show was put together.
I was expecting a modern twist on Grease when they announced the performance, but it wasn’t, and I appreciated that. Most times when old movies get modernized it leaves an unsettling feeling. “Grease: Live” was a great mix between a remake of a movie, and the art of a musical.
The ending was the best part, it hands down gave the movie the justice it deserved. At first I was a little disappointed that the carnival was inside the gym, but then the cast went outside and there it was. A ferris wheel all lit up, and a song and dance going on right in front of it, and that song and dance made me smile just as much as the first time I saw the scene in the movie. It once again was the perfect ending.
I may never know how Julianne Hough managed to put a skin tight bodysuit on in one commercial break, but I do know that “Grease: Live” was definitely worth watching and did not disappoint.
