Red Ribbon Week 2013 kicked off on Mon. Oct 21. Red Ribbon Week is a national drug prevention campaign directed towards teenagers and keeping them drug-free. It started in honor of government drug administration official Enrique Camarena’s tragic death went he went down battling major drug cartels in fight for an anti-drug America.
Now, Red Ribbon Week is celebrated all across the US in schools with students of all ages. Typically, each day of Red Ribbon Week has a different theme and activity for teachers and kids to show their support in the fight against drugs. ACHS is showing their participation and pride by the decorations in the hallways and classrooms and the encouragement to take part in the week’s themed activities.
This year, Monday was pledge day/wrap day, where various parts of the school were wrapped in red construction paper. On Tuesday, students were asked to wear red. Themes for the rest of the week are as follows: on Wednesday snow cones will be sold in the commons, on Thursday students are encouraged to dress in their favorite superhero attire, and on Friday students and staff will be wearing their Sequoit wear to show a school united against drugs use.
