On Friday, December 6th, Antioch wrestling held their first home match of the season against Round Lake. So far this season they have gone against Carmel Catholic, and held the Ted DeRousse tournament, making this their first time facing the Panthers this season.
Round Lake put up a hard fight against Antioch, but ultimately the Sequoits ended up coming out on top, with the final score being 39-30. Although they won the meet, Senior Alexander Barbarise voiced his opinion about the Sequoit’s preparation.
“We underestimated them as a team,” Barbarise said.
Despite having this mindset, Barbarise was able to win his match by pinning his opponent during the second period.
Barbarise wasn’t the only one who saw success on the mat during Friday’s meet; Senior Daniel McPherson ended his match with a win by decision.
“My individual match did not go as planned simply because I missed three days of practice during the week,” McPherson said. “ However, I won the match 2-0 so I am happy with that.”
Despite hardships throughout the meet, the team continued to keep a positive mindset and stay focused.
“I believe we can all improve our mental state and stop worrying about who we are going to face,” Mcpherson said. “[We] need to just going out there and wrestle our hardest.”
Along with that, the wrestlers need to keep in mind the tips which Coach Borrero provides them.
“Respect all, fear none,” Coach Borrero Said.
The Sequoits are going to take that tip to heart as they head into the rest of the season. Make sure to come out and support our Sequoits at their upcoming match against North Chicago and their quad against Maine South, Mundelein and St.Patricks.
