Senior Booker Grass uses his last year in high school as an opportunity to try something new.
Many students see their senior year as a time to relax, be commitment free, have fun and enjoy their last year before heading off to college. On the other hand, there are student athletes that put countless hours all year long dedicating themselves to a sport. This is not the case for senior Booker Grass. Grass is doing something that not many students would do, playing soccer on the JV team and having no experience with the sport.
Grass used to play basketball and football when he was younger but realized his true passion was for band. Since then, he has not played any competitive sports but has always just had fun playing with the guys competitively. Grass has always had a full schedule with other commitments and never had the time to try something new. However, when he entered his senior year he decided to give it a try; Although he may not have any experience.
For Grass, going out for soccer his senior year was a no brainer, “I was sort of like, screw it, I am a senior, why not?” said Grass. Grass has always had a lot of friends who have played soccer and has always had a passion for the game. Although Grass is not on the Varsity team it does not bother him, because he just goes out and has fun everyday trying his best.
For being a first year player, Grass has surpassed his expectations on the soccer field. In his surprise he was named a captain without playing a competitive game of soccer in his life. Though Grass is a first year player, all of his teammates respect him as if he has played his whole life.
“It’s funny cause I really don’t care cause I’m just happy to be there, so the guys don’t judge me at all because they know that I’m trying hard and having fun,” Grass said.
Since Grass has joined, he has loved every second of the season. He initially did not think he would play but to his surprise yet again his is a starter. He does not have many goals for the season, just to have fun. Yet there is one goal that is on his mind.
Grass knows that soccer is not his strong suit; he has yet to score a goal this season but still keeps a good spirit.
“My goal is to get a goal, but I don’t know if that’s gonna be attainable.” Grass said.
All in all, Grass is more than happy with his decision to have gone out for soccer his senior year. It takes a lot of courage to go out for a sport you have never played, let alone during your senior year. Grass’s passion for the game led him to trying something he never expected to have done before being so busy with other extracurriculars. Grass recommends going out for a sport your senior year even if you have never played it. He took his advantage of being able to try a sport before it was too late to never play. Now Grass will never have to go the rest of his life wondering if he should of played or not.

This makes me so happy to read. Maybe I’m just a proud fraunt(friend aunt ) but Booker is one of the most incredible kids I have ever met. He is smart, kind and just an absolute pleasure to be around. I wish I knew more boys that were this cool when I was in high school.
