Oklahoma performance

Many students know Wanda Sobczak is the school nurse, but that’s all that they know about her. Sobczak attended ACHS for high school during the 1970’s and was involved in many activities. She loved to sing and dance which explains her participation in many of the school’s productions.

“I played the part of Aunt Eller in Oklahoma. It was fun because, while she wasn’t a lead, she was still a character you could let yourself have fun with,” said Sobczak.

Drama was Sobczak’s favorite class because it combined her two favorite things: singing and dancing.

Sobc0495_001zak was a good student and her English teacher Jim Corrigan had an impact on her life both during and after high school.

“Jim Corrigan was one of those teachers you loved and hated at the same time. You dreaded getting him because you knew you were going to work. But he was encouraging and the A I earned his class is the A I am most proud of,” said Sobczak.

Corrigan gave Sobczak confidence which helped her later in life.

Throughout high school, Sobczak was also involved outside of school. She participated in a lot of activities through her church, such as singing in the choir. “I remember one time helping unload food trucks for a local food pantry.” Even today Sobczak is still involved in the community. Currently she is working with a group trying to get health insurance for all residents of Antioch.

Unlike other alumni who came back to ACHS, Sobczak never dreamed about returning to her high school to work.

“My daughter mentioned that there was an opening for school nurse and I didn’t really pay attention to it. But after the position had been open for a while I talked to my husband and decided to try it,” said Sobczak. “Luckily, I was the only applicant so I didn’t really have any competition. It took some adjusting at first, but I love being the nurse now.”

Sobczak believes that her time at ACHS as a student gave her a good foundation for later in life. Even though she never thought she would end up back at ACHS she believes that, “Once a Sequoit, Always a Sequoit.”
