Old Facebook Versus New Facebook
Students at ACHS talk about how Facebook has changed over the years.
Facebook is a large social media program launched in 2004, created by Mark Zuckerberg. It was used a lot by teenagers, as well as adults in their twenties. As time went on, the younger generation quickly caught on to the trend and adopted Facebook as their own. Facebook was once a place for young kids to chat with friends, post about their lives and share funny videos, but it has changed greatly since its creation.
What was once a light-hearted, fun social media site is now commonly known for the crimes it has committed. The most recent crime was in March, 2018. Facebook was exposed for selling the data of fifty million users to a company called Cambridge Analytica. This company is an analytics and consulting firm, but when the news dropped about Facebook leaking the personal information and profiles of fifty million users, their stocks immediately dropped and many people deleted Facebook.
“Facebook was once all fun and games with friends but now it is just filled with negativity and it’s really gotten discouraging lately,” senior Clayton Ushkow said.
For some, this leak had little to no effect on them. Some people believe that Facebook has always been bad, but it doesn’t bother them. People use Facebook because it is a fun platform and it connects them with others.
“I’d say that I prefer the new Facebook because throughout all of Facebook’s lifespan, they will always have problems,” senior Iain Smith said.
Facebook has apologized and has done a lot to try and rebuild their relationship with its users. Although the relationship is still not repaired, Facebook is doing everything it can to try to make amends.
