On Sunday, February 16th, the Antioch girls’ track team competed in the Spire High School Indoor Games. This was the first meet of the indoor season for girls and the first time going to this Ohio meet. This meet was hosted by Spire Academy at their indoor complex in Geneva, OH. As the first meet, the Sequoits had a very promising start. Not only were the girls able to compete with new talent, but they were able to succeed in many different events.
The Sequoits had many successful field event performances. First is ACHS senior Sydney Walker who participated in the high jump event. Walker placed second in the girl’s high jump, clearing 5’2” which is the state qualifying height. Also in the top 5, Sophomore Abbigail Fuesting achieved a triple jump distance of 9.32 meters which placed her in fifth place.
Traveling to Ohio the Sequoits were able to pick up a new field event, weight throw. Weight throw is when a weight is thrown one-handed over a bar set at increasing heights above the thrower. Not only were the girls able to compete in this event for the first time but three athletes placed in the top ten. Sophomore Natalia Maciejewski, junior Allison Reif and junior Omolewa Olusegun were able to bring home a new level of excitement and be the first Sequoits to compete and place well in weight throw. Their coach, Dan Oslage, was eager to bring home the new records.
“We have a new school record holder in the weight throw,” Oslage said. “It’s the first time a Sequoit ever did it. They technically made history in this meet for Antioch.”
Moving on from the field events, running had some outstanding performances as well. Senior Rosie Gonzalez participated in both the 3200-meter and 1600-meter races. Gonzalez got a well-deserved first place in the 3200 meter or 2 mile with a time of 11:35:36. In the 1600 meter or 1 mile Gonzalez placed second place with 5:29:01 as her time.
Fuesting once again excelled in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.12 seconds, finishing her in third place overall. Also placing third, junior Kennedi Copeland ran a 1:01:49 in the 400-meter dash.
The Sequoits as a team finished strong with many outstanding performances across all events. The girls are starting the season successfully and look forward to keeping up the momentum. Watch the team’s momentum continue at the Co-Ed Quad, and cheer them on at the D117 fieldhouse on Feb. 28.
