“Obama Out”: White House Correspondents Dinner
In the final year of his term, President Obama pokes fun at journalists, Republicans and himself.
President Barack Obama on Saturday attended his final White House Correspondents Dinner, an event where he welcomed journalists and celebrities to share a laugh. This year, the dinner was hosted by Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show personality Larry Wilmore. Both the president and Wilmore took the dinner as an opportunity to comment on politics and current events, but also showed a lighter side of the situation.
“Eight years ago I said it was time to change the tone of our politics,” Obama said. “In hindsight, I clearly should have been more specific.”
Obama also joked, “if this material works well, I’m going to use it at Goldman Sachs next year — Earn me some serious Tubmans.”
He also called out former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for forcing her appeal to young voters and Republican National Chairman Reince Priebus for the GOP’s messy nomination process this year.
“Congratulations on all your success,” Obama said. “The Republican party, the nomination process. It’s all going great. Keep it up.”
Obama also concluded his final White House Correspondents Dinner speech by dropping a mic, saying, “Obama out.” In that symbolic gesture, he showed his acceptance of his term ending and preparation for the next commander in chief.
