No Ease for the Bees
Antioch beats Zion 5-0
The boys varsity soccer team started the week off strong with a win against Zion-Benton, after placing second in the IMSA tournament this past weekend. Capitalizing on their opportunities, the sequoits put four goals in the back of net by the end of the first half, followed by one early on in the second. The sequoits took the 5-0 win, earning their second shutout of the season.
“I think we played our best game yet. We are really working hard to keep a winning streak going,” said junior Peter Boeh.
The sequoits seized every moment they had to find the back of the net throughout the first half. Within two minutes of the game, junior Bart Krumpos crossed in the first corner of the half, making direct contact with junior captain, Rolando Vazquez’s foot, leaving the Zion keeper motionless. Sequoits up, 1-0. After twenty minutes of battling, Boeh found the split between the bee’s defense, leading senior Cody Matonik with the break away. The Zion goalkeeper stuck in indecision, Matonik chips the ball right over the keeper, putting the sequoits up 2-0. Not even a minutes goes by, and Boeh won the ball right off the foot of the opponent, making it 3-0 for the sequoits. The clock showed ten minutes left in the first half when junior Gabe Tijerina got a foot on the ball. Another through ball was sent past the wide gap in the zee bee’s defensive line. Sophomore Sebastian Scofield ran onto the wide open pass, chipping the bee’s goalkeeper once again. Sequoits finished out the first half with a substantial 4-0 lead.
“There’s no better feeling than the rush you get when your shot hits the back of the net and your team rushes at you all at once,” said Boeh.
Not long into the second half, senior Zach Espitia was lead into the channel of the field, finding the head of Boeh, earning his second goal of the game. Due to unexpected lightening half way through the second half, authorities, called the game. The sequoits finished out the night with the 5-0 win over the Zion-Benton zee bees. The boys plan to keep the winning streak going as they face Richmond Burton High School on September 12.
