NBA Releases New Collection of Jerseys
Each team released new city jerseys to correlate with the new season.
Following last year’s blockbuster deal with Nike, every NBA team is releasing a new jersey for this year’s season. Each team attempted to replicate their city or team history to create their jersey while maintaining fan interest. Nike pushed for each team to tell their own story with the jersey and most teams have responded to the call.
Miami’s jersey, titled “Miami Vice,” was immediately crowned a fan favorite. The team used last year’s jersey as a template for the innovated version. People flocked to the neon blue and pink collar and side on a black canvas as well as a unique font.
On the contrary, the Milwaukee Bucks jersey was poorly received by fans. Modeled after their former arena, the jersey utilizes the three primary colors of the court and two shades of green. Many have criticized it for the strange divisions and choice of color. The team debuted the jersey in a win against the Denver Nuggets on November 18.
A jersey popular in the area is the Chicago Bulls flag jersey. The jersey is black with two horizontal blue stripes and four red stars, modeled after the flag of the city of Chicago and the phrase “Sweet Home” is sewn above the Nike tag. Sophomore Sean DeVries thinks the Chicago jersey is an excellent design.
“They have the Chicago flag design on it and that’s pretty cool,” DeVries said. “I like it when teams use darker colors in jerseys.”
One team that changed their jersey concept drastically from last year is the Minnesota Timberwolves. This year, the jersey is based on late music star Prince and his album “Purple Rain.” The Timberwolves use the same font as the box art of the album and feature the emblem of Prince’s first record deal, Paisley Park Records. In Nike’s in-depth breakdown of the jersey, they mention more interesting nuances of the design.
According to Nike News, there is a metallic graphic is reminiscent of the studs on Prince’s jacket and white accents throughout the jersey as a nod to his ruffled blouses.
While most teams opted to create a new jersey, more than 40 percent of the league manipulated or kept the same jersey as last year. The Utah Jazz elected to re-release the same jersey as last year. Rather than rerelease, the San Antonio Spurs added two white lines on the sides of the otherwise replica jersey. Some teams, like the aforementioned Miami Heat, flipped the base color of their jersey from a dark color to light color or vice versa. Teams like the Phoenix Suns and the Orlando Magic kept the same inspiration from last year in their redesigns.
Nike plans to continue the yearly release of the city uniform and teams hope to push the bar with jersey design. As time continues, it is uncertain how many teams will opt into repeating prior jerseys.
