Movies Recreating Characters Using CGI

Just recently, three well known actors have passed away while filming or about to film a movie that they play a large role in. “Fast and Furious” Paul Walker passed away in a car accident on Nov. 30, 2013. Director James Wan most importantly wanted to honor Walker’s death but was

unsure how, which caused production to shut down for months. As of recently, Wan has decided to cast Walker’s younger and almost identical brother, Cody Walker. Cody is a stuntman himself, and most scenes where he will be portrayed as Paul will be filmed from behind. Any scenes that need a close up of Paul’s face will use a Computer-Generated Image (CGI). Wan plans on having Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker’s character) die in the movie. Along with Cody taking the role for Paul, he has also decided to carry on  Paul’s humanitarian organization Reach Out Worldwide as the brand manager.

The death of “Hunger Games” Philip Seymour Hoffman has caused Lionsgate to use a CGI for him as well. Hoffman passed away on Feb. 2, 2014 and only had about seven days left of filming the third movie of the “Hunger Games” series, “Mockingjay Part II”. Although there’s only one scene left to shoot, it is a major one. Rob Legato, a veteran effects supervisor said, “I won’t say you could generate a Philip

Seymour Hoffman with all the acting ability, but you could certainly replicate him for a shot or two.” While CGI’s are not too difficult to make, it is difficult to recreate the actor’s voice to fit the script. Lionsgate hopes that the scene is not going to be too obvious or awkward, but they do know it will be sad.

Although the filming has not started, the “Ghostbusters” sequel has been in the works for years. One of the main characters, Harold Ramis, passed away on Feb. 24, 2014. Ramis is an original star from the film and screenwriter, leaving director Ivan Reitman and Sony to figure out what to do with the script. Actor Ernie Hudson said: “There can’t be another Ghostbusters without Harold. There could be another ghost something but there won’t be. That was always my fear. That something would happen before we all got together.” It is still undetermined how Reitman and Sony will go about making this upcoming film, but CGI may be considered.

While films may not be the same with a main character as a CGI, the show must go on. Directors hope to honor all of their deaths and to continue the movie series for the fans.
