iPhone 13 lineup
iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini:
iPhone 13 and 13 mini feature the same sleek design as the iPhone 12 lineup with a few notable differences. The front notch on the top of the display shrunk by 20% and the rear cameras now sit in a diagonal, rather than one above the other.
The front glass features Ceramic Shield, making it tougher than any other smartphone glass. The Super Retina XDR display is now 28% brighter than the previous model with a 1200 nits maximum HDR brightness.
The all-new Apple A15 Bionic processor was the star of the show, featuring two new high-performance cores and four new high-efficiency cores. Paired with a new neural engine, A15 Bionic is Apple’s fastest mobile processor ever.
iPhone 13 and 13 mini also feature the most advanced dual-camera system on a smartphone as well as the biggest sensor ever in a dual-camera system. The wide camera gathers 47% more light than the previous model, allowing for optimal low-light photography. Both camera sensors also feature sensor-shift image stabilization in order to give the user significantly clearer photos. The Ultra Wide camera also features a custom 12-megapixel sensor.
iPhone’s video performance has also been greatly improved with the addition of Cinematic Mode. With this feature, iPhone uses machine learning and the neural engine in order to process video with an adaptive depth of field. It is similar to Portrait Mode on a photo; the user is able to change the focal distance in order to create more film-like videos.
Even with new features, the battery life on iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini have improved; a 1.5 hour increase on the mini and 2.5 hours on the 13. The addition of Smart Data Mode also assists in providing better battery life. With this enabled, iPhone will automatically switch to LTE when 5G speeds are not necessary.
iPhone 13 mini will start at $699 for a 128 gigabyte storage option, and the iPhone 13 will start at $799. A 513 gigabyte storage option will be available as well. Both devices are available in pink, blue, midnight, starlight and (PRODUCT)ᴿᴱᴰ. Preorders begin Sept. 17 and devices will be available starting Sept. 24.
iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max:
iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, on the other hand, are considered Apple’s most Pro iPhone ever. The front face of both devices feature the same smaller notch as iPhone 13 to house the camera and FaceID module. The rear has slightly raised camera bumps with stainless steel rims. Ceramic Shield covers the display for better drop and crack resistance, and the back remains a matte glass. The Pro lineup still touts IP68 water and dust resistance.
iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max are both newly equipped with a ProMotion display, meaning they have a variable refresh rate as high as 120 hertz. The adaptive frame rate precisely matches the movements of the user’s finger. The new Super Retina XDR displays are capable of outputting a maximum outdoor brightness of 1000 nits, 25% higher than previous models.
The devices’ insides have been completely redesigned over last year’s model of iPhone. Featuring the same A15 Bionic chip as the standard 13 lineup, iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max’s five-core GPU provided plenty of graphics performance.
The camera system also received a total overhaul. The new 77-millimeter telephoto lens is capable of three-times optical zoom, an improvement over last year’s 2.5-times optical zoom on iPhone 12 Pro. This allows for a total six-times optical zoom range. The Ultra Wide camera will see a 92% increase in low-light performance. Additionally, the Ultra Wide camera is capable of taking macro shots as close as two centimeters away. All three cameras now feature Night Mode, and the improved neural engine of the A15 Bionic allows for more accurate skin tones in photos. Photographic Styles are also available, which allow users to fine-tune how they want their photos to look before the photo is taken. This data is used when processing the image to create the style the photographer is looking for. The feature is also available on iPhone 13.
Video also sees improvement with iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max with the support for Apple ProRes at up to 30 frames per second at 4K.
Battery life is 1.5 hours longer on iPhone 13 Pro than iPhone 12 Pro and 2.5 hours longer on iPhone 13 Pro Max than iPhone 12 Pro Max, making it the longest battery life of any iPhone.
iPhone 13 Pro will start at $999 and iPhone 13 Pro Max will start at $1099. A new one terabyte storage option will also be available. Both devices will come in graphite, gold, silver or an all-new sierra blue. Preorders will begin Sept. 17 and they will be available Sept. 24.
