On Saturday, Dec. 9, the Antioch Community High School boys basketball team took on the Warhawks of North Chicago in a NLCC matchup. Going into the game, the Sequoits were 1-0 in conference, beating their rivals, Lakes Community High School, the week prior. The Sequoits came out of the gates hot; senior Carter Webb led the way in the first quarter with ten points helping give the Sequoits a 16-6 lead.
The second quarter was much of the same with the Sequoits out scoring the Warhawks by seven. The rock solid defensive identity is something that the boys are very proud of and they held North Chicago to 17 points in the entire first half while scoring 34 on the other end of the court. The locker room was full of energy and excitement but the team knew they still had another half to play before they could celebrate.
After coming out and shooting around a little to warm up for the second half, the fire alarms started screaming and everyone had to evacuate the building. Some popcorn got burnt in the concession stand and the whole hall was full of smoke. They boys went to various cars to stay warm while the fire department took care of the incident. The players sat in the vehicles anxiously, waiting to see if they would finish the game or not.
After about 30 minutes, the teams were given the green light to head back inside and finish the game. Both teams were given three minutes to warm up again and try to get back in the groove before restarting the game.
The Sequoits were a little thrown off by the stop, but they tried their best to not let it affect their game. The Sequoits came out a little slower than in the first half but still out scored North Chicago 15-13 in the third quarter.
The Sequoits did not play the greatest fourth quarter, but they managed to keep their wide lead and finished the game, winning 57-43. Webb finished the game with 21 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Juniors Teddi Wetu and Marshall Gerkhe had 10 and 12 points. The Sequoits take on the Rams of Grayslake Central in another NLCC matchup on Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at home. Come out and support the Sequoits as they try and keep their perfect record in the conference.
