High School: Expectation vs. Reality
Popular shows and movies can leave an effect on the way students experience high school.
Many teenagers are approaching the point of adulthood and they will have to make important decisions for themselves that will affect the way they proceed in life. Some like to look back at some of the old shows and movies they watched as kids, and point out how high school life seemed so much easier when it was on television. It is shows like “Drake and Josh”, “Zoey 101” and “High School Musical” that make students feel like every dilemma they have can be solved in a matter of 22 minutes.
In the show “High School Musical,” viewers watch as six teenagers deal with the everyday struggles of high school, while adding in an exaggerated amount of singing and dancing.
“I feel that Disney shows really set that standard, because they focused on that setting and how high school would consists of the mean girls and jocks,” senior Rylie Mercer said.
For younger audiences, it made them feel excited and pumped for their progression into high school.
“High School Musical made me think that high school would just like it was in the movie, but in reality it is nothing like it,” junior Briana Pinto said.
On the other hand, shows like “Zoey 101” and “Drake and Josh” delt with the difficulties of everyday problems like crushes, school work, and having a part-time job. They also showed how to deal with these problems in their own special way.
People might think events that occur on television and in the movies are a mirror of reality, but that is not always the case.
“Based on what you see in movies and on TV, it’s easy to expect a lot from your freshman year, but in reality not much changes as you make the switch,” writer Alexandra Daluisio said.
Do not be fooled on what is on television when it comes to high school.
