Harper Lee Dies at 89
The woman who immortalized the Finch family and racial turmoil in literature passes away.
Beloved author Harper Lee died on Feb. 19, 2016. She passed away of old age in her hometown Monroeville, Alabama.
Lee’s iconic novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” is known for its raw use of life back in the 1930s and is widely read in middle and high schools world-wide. The book is taught in Community High School District 117’s freshman curriculum. “To Kill A Mockingbird” and its issues are easily relatable to today, which is why some people will miss Lee’s work, and even Lee herself.
“I thought it was [kind of] sad because she had a really significant impact on literature,” freshman Corrine Wolf said.
English teacher Sam Worden had similar things to say about Lee.
“I’m glad she’s dead,” Worden said. ¨I feel like she was getting prayed on in the last few years in her life, so I think she’s in a better place.¨
Lee was an extraordinary and successful writer, selling over 50 million copies of “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
As Harper Lee said, “A book to read is not the one that thinks for you, but the one that makes you think.”
