This past weekend, the Antioch girl’s volleyball team competed in a tournament at Jefferson High School.

Before the game even began, there was much adversity that the team had to face. Losing two starting seniors isn’t the easiest thing to deal with, especially when the team has to figure out a plan without them two days before the tournament.

“We had to figure out a new lineup and only had Friday’s practice to work on it,” sophomore Maiah Moll said. “It was a challenge for us in the start, but once everything was figured out we played really good.”

Even without their starters, the team beat four out of the five teams at the tournament. They defeated Grayslake Central, Jefferson, South Beloit and Joliet. The only team that stopped them from being champions in the tournament was Pekin.

The first two sets against Pekin were close, both teams winning one. The third match was what it came down to.

“We beat them in the first game and lost the second in a close game, but we didn’t come to play in the third game,” Moll said.

Overall, the girls did well and fought through the adversity. Playing without two senior leaders is not easy, but they did their best. The team came up with a very quick game plan and they executed it to the best of their abilities.

The team’s next match will be today, September 13, at 7 p.m. against North Chicago.
