On Thursday, Sept. 28, the Antioch Community High School girls golf team took on Regionals at their home course, Spring Valley Country Club. There were multiple teams competing, such as Carmel, Grant, Grayslake Central, Grayslake North, Gurnee (Warren), Lakes, Libertyville, Mundelein and Wauconda.
Golf is one of the shortest fall sports seasons; they have already competed in the NLCC Tournament where they came out with a first place finish on Sept. 19. There was still more to be done to qualify as a team for Sectionals. The girls worked hard for only having four days of practice between the two tournaments.
The morning of Regionals, the golf team headed out to Pro Circle to practice on the driving range then make their way to the course to compete. During the day, the rain was on and off rain. Overall, it took seven hours for everyone to finish and results to be processed.
For Sectional qualifying, the top three teams advance out of the ten, and the top ten individual scores qualify. The three teams that advanced together, their individual scores are not counted for the individual qualifiers.
Although the team placed fourth, the Sequoits girls golf team still had two individual Sectional qualifiers. Junior Manuela Posada won the whole tournament and placed first with a score of 76. Par at Spring Valley golf course is 70 which means Posada scored only 6 over. Lastly, senior Maddie Barrett placed 13th and qualified third individually for Sectionals with a 96.
Sectionals were on Monday, Oct. 2 at Buffalo Grove Golf Course. Posada and Barrett both played the course on Sunday to get used to it before the big match. There were 112 girls competing at Sectionals. It is the same qualifying rules as Regionals. Although they did not place for State, Posada placed 33rd with an 84 and Barrett placed 76th with a 100 out of 112 girls. The team finished off the season strong and are hoping for a good next year.
