The Antioch Community High School field hockey team played Francis W. Parker High School in a toe-to-toe matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 25. The Colonels, who are from the city of Chicago, came to ACHS with a 2-4 record.
The game started quickly, with several opportunities created by both teams. The defense stayed resilient all first quarter, with neither team looking to give in to the constant push. Midway through the first quarter, the Colonels were finally able to break through the stalemate, making the score 1-0. Following the goal, the Sequoits did not let their head hang low and put their heads down at all. The Sequoits were able to find the back of the net, with sophomore Alaina Tan putting one past the goalie right in front of the net. This was the spark needed for the girls to gain momentum. Tan’s highlights did not stop there. With her speed and determination for the ball, Tan was able to block tackle the ball away and drop a perfect pass for senior Kaitlin Baylen to slot in. This made it 2-1 Sequoits ending the first half.
Some bright moments came from sophomore Scarlett Carroll, who led the team to keep putting on the pressure. Though the Sequoits had momentum, the Colonels were able to take advantage yet again. They scored with the minutes counting down in the second quarter. Following the final buzzer of the first half, junior Addison Webb showed strong leadership, lifting her teammates up after a harsh conceding goal.
Both teams had high energy coming into the third quarter. Yet again, the same solid defense came from both the Sequoits and Colonels. Senior Mycah Thompson led the lines with several steals and blocks, constantly refusing to give her opponents the advantage. It was not until the last two minutes of the third quarter, when the Colonels scored a late, diminishing goal, that would go unanswered. Unfortunately, the girls fell in this matchup, 3-2, dropping their record to 6-6 in the season. Despite the loss, the girls are looking to continue to fight hard with the rest of the games as the season winds down.
