Lady Sequoits Claim Third IHSA 3A Regional Title
A 57-45 win over Marian Central gave the girls varsity basketball team a trip to St. Viator and an opportunity to claim another sectional title.
It has been another successful season for the Lady Sequoits basketball team, going 24-5 in their regular season games, and now adding two more wins after a 57-45 win over Marian Central to claim the IHSA 3A Regional title at Woodstock North High School.
After a close first quarter, the Sequoits managed to keep the score up 14-13. Halftime was no different. The Lady Sequoits finished at the half with Antioch up 22-21.
The energy from Marian Central and their booming fan section showed there was no doubt that the team had set in their minds set on upsetting No. 1 Antioch and claiming the regional plaque. Despite a number of fallbacks in the first half, the Lady Sequoits had a different plan. They’d come out swinging, hoping to silence the Hurricanes and turn the tide in their direction.
The third quarter ended at a 39-39 tie, putting the crowd on the edge of their seats for the fourth and final quarter.
Continuing to struggle with defense, the Sequoits put everything they had into the final eight minutes of the game.
With a burst of energy from the offense, the Sequoits finished the game with a score of 57-45 over Marian and became the 2016 IHSA Regional champions for the third consecutive year.
“We felt pretty confident coming into this game; we knew we needed to just go out there are do the thing we do best,” junior Ashley Reiser said.
Junior Amy Reiser recently came off of a back injury, but continues to hit the court with as much intensity and hard work.
“We were excited for this game; we wanted to repeat our success from last year,” Amy said. “We need to come out ready in sectionals. It’s important we play the way we did in the beginning of this game and come out with a lot of communication.”
The opening sectional game will be held this Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. at St. Viator. If the Lady Sequoits win the opening game, they will advance to the IHSA Sectional Championship game next Thursday, also at St. Viator.
