Each homecoming, Antioch Community High School holds an event called Powderpuff football. Sequoit Senate advisor Laura Tielke has been running powderpuff for 20 years now. Powderpuff consists of 36 girls from each grade coming together to play some lighthearted flag football. There are 4 groups of 9 girls for an A and B offense along with an A and B defense. Freshmen play sophomores first and followed by the juniors playing the seniors.
Different teachers at ACHS volunteer every year to coach each grade. There will be one or two coaches per team and two referees. Depending on who the coach is will determine how many practices they hold prior to the game.
“Some coaches have multiple practices, some have one and some have a practice the day of,“ Tielke said.
It is common for coaches to choose boys from the football team to help the girls develop different skills and run plays. In previous years, boys from the football team would go all out and dress up like famous football coaches and wear sunglasses and fake mustaches.
“It’s actually funny to watch them,” Tielke said.
Sign-up began on Aug. 29, 2022, and ends on Sept. 7, 2022; spots are limited. At sign-up, a $20 fee will be administered to pay for the mouth guards, t-shirt and medallions. Each grade level has different color t-shirts: freshmen wear white, sophomores wear grey, juniors wear red and seniors wear black.
The game will be held on Wed. Sept 21, 2022, from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. The freshman vs. sophomore game will start at 6:30 p.m., immediately following will be the junior vs. senior game. During the game, there are two halves and each one lasts 15 minutes, the clock will not stop. The winning team receives a champion medal and the losing team receives a runner-up medal.
