Every student in the stands Friday night was dressed in red, white and blue. The student section was overflowing with kids in preparation for the varsity football team to play their first conference game of the season against Grayslake North.
The football team was looking to start the journey to their fourth consecutive Northern Lake County Conference (NLCC) championship.
“I thought we did well as a team,” junior Jackson Gutke said. “We’re doing better every week, we just have to fix our mental mistakes.”
The boys came out strong and fast, scoring three touchdowns in the first quarter by junior Dino Kaliakmanis and seniors Brandon Reynolds and Treshawn Watson. It was clear that the Sequoits were determined to win their fourth conference title.
“We shut out Grayslake North’s explosive offense, making for two shutouts so far this the season,” senior captain Jackson DeVaughn said.
The Sequoits’ stellar defense held the Knights to a total of zero points the entire game; they came out vigorous and ready to stop the quick Knight offense. Both the offense and defense are playing exceptionally well and are always looking to improve.
“We played really well,” sophomore Andrew Bowles said. “As always, there’s things to fix and work on, but that is what our practices mainly are focused on.”
The Sequoits came out on top, dominating Grayslake North 38-0 and the boys are looking to continue on the road to a conference championship. On September 20, they play the Wauconda Bulldogs with the hopes to continue their great performance.
