The classic, checkered-print longsleeve shirt of the 90s has once again found itself in the closet of many teenagers. The flannel has become a staple fashion piece for all seasons.
Flannels have ended up as a rugged alternative to the cardigan; throwing one over a simple shirt can make any outfit more stylish. Available in a wide variety of colors the flannel rose to popularity, along with the soft and cozy fabric. Flannels are also easy to wear, flannels can added as one my rush out of the door and your outfit can be complete.
“They are comfortable and versatile if it goes with the rest of my outfit or can pull a look together,” senior Aubry Herbon said.
Flannels emerged in Europe by the 17th century, but it was not until the 20th century when flannels became popular in the United States. After reaching the western hemisphere and the closets of Americans, they were commonly found on men. However, this trend has transformed across genders and ages groups.
Commonly mistaken for plaid, flannels refer to the fabric used to make the shirt, while plaid is the pattern used on the shirt. Flannels and plaids were used together when discussing the shirt and are often referred to interchangeably.
Flannels have been making a comeback to be the new look in 2017.
“I like flannels because they are stylish and have an amazing design and pattern on them.” senior Casey Bala said. “I want to wear them on days that I’m going for a formal/decent look, but also something very comfortable.”
