Chance The Rapper performs at the 2017 Grammys, where he also won 3 awards including best rap album, best new artist and best rap performance against a field of talent from across the music industry.

On a star studded night in Los Angeles, California, the 2017 Grammys awarded musicians who lit up both charts and stages in the last calendar year. Although the Grammys are an awards show, many big names in the music industry provide extravagant performances to their fans both at the show and watching from home.

  1. Ed Sheeran

With the release of two singles off of his long-awaited album “Divide,” Sheeran has once again grabbed the music world’s attention.  The 25-year-old U.K. sensation charted on the Billboard 100 once again as “Shape of You” reached number 1 and “Castle on The Hill” peaked at 6. Sheeran performed “Shape of You” to the millions watching in his signature style: simplicity. He took to the stage with nothing but an acoustic guitar, his microphone and a backing keyboard. He then proceeded to put on a performance that will not soon be forgotten.

  1. Beyonce

Beyonce Knowles took to the stage for the first time since announcing she is pregnant with twins. The 35-year-old kept the theme of her latest album, Lemonade, in that her performance was heavily inspired by feminism, family and motherhood. After being introduced by her mother, Tina Knowles, she performed “Love Drought” and “Sandcastles.” Although critics have slated the expecting mother for not keeping to the extravagant standard of her usual performances, this performance will go down as one of the most iconic of her career.

  1. Chance The Rapper

Chicago native and hip-hop artist Chance Bennett took to the 2017 Grammys stage and performed songs off his latest release Coloring Book, a hip-hop album influenced heavily by gospel and family. Bennett, who won the Grammy for best new artist, best rap performance and best rap album, performed “All We Got” and “How Great.” Bennett’s performance included choir and band performances, which feature heavily in Coloring Book added to his unique sound.

“Chance’s sound is extremely unique,” senior Gabby Wolske said. “He is easily one of my favorite artists and his performance was one of, if not the best one of the night.

  1.  The Prince Tribute

With the death of Prince late last year, his personal friends, The Time, performed a touching tribute to the late rock legend alongside Bruno Mars, who sported Prince’s iconic “Purple Rain” look and sang “Let’s Go Crazy.” The tribute included Mars belting out a guitar solo fitting of Prince himself, something that nobody expected him to do. Appropriately covering Prince is no easy task, but The Time and Bruno Mars put on a tribute for the ages.

  1. Alicia Keys & Maren Morris

Mostly unheard of country newcomer, Maren Morris performed with Grammys regular Alicia Keys. This was one of the most pleasant surprises of the night as the duet adaption of Morris’ song “Once” lit up the Grammys stage. Some were even brought to tears.

“[The Alicia Keys and Maren Morris] performance was among my favorites,” senior Eston Iman said. “I listen to country a lot and Maren Morris is one of my favorite new artists. Her and Alicia Keys’ duet had one of the best sounds of the night.”
