Field Hockey’s Annual ‘Stick It To Cancer’ Game Pauses At A Tie
Lakes and Antioch’s Annual stick it to cancer game ends in a draw.
October 1, 2014
On Sept 30. Antioch’s varsity field hockey team laced up their cleats, and prepared themselves for their rivalry game against Lakes Community High School. But this game had much more meaning than just bragging rights. This game was to raise awareness about breast cancer and was demonstrated by both teams wearing special jerseys with pink writing. On top of that, every time the ACHS field hockey team scored, $25 was donated by Raymond Chevrolet.
Lakes marched onto the field ready for revenge, as they were beaten in the first game against Antioch, 2-1. The game progressed and after constant back and forth play between the two teams, Antioch had multiple opportunities to score a goal but missed by a fraction, each time. Halftime had arrived and the score was tied, 0-0. Each coach led their team and tried to boost the moral of the players.
The girls took the field for the second half of the game, both tired and cold. The second half started and ended with the same result, as both teams continued to
go back and forth down the field, showing each other their defensive strengths. It was the end of regulation time, and both teams had a short break to rest their tired and heavy legs before they had to charge onto the field for another 10 minutes in over-time.
Again, play by play was the exact same. Once over-time ended and the teams found themselves still tied 0-0, the game resulted in a shoot-out. During the shoot-out, goalie, Rebekah Cartlidge, came up big by stopping two of the Lakes players from scoring in the shootout, out of three. Senior, Shannon Zogran, came up big by scoring the only goal in the shootout for the Sequoits, and ending the game in a tie. The girls will have to wait till the playoffs to see how this game will effect them. Their next game is on Thursday, Oct 2, against Oak Park River Forest.
