Field Hockey: Silver in Gateway Classic
September 2, 2014
Just one year ago, the ACHS field hockey team traveled to St. Louis with high hopes and the thirst for victory. They got it. During the 2013, the Sequoits won the Gateway Classic.
This year, the Sequoits boarded the bus on early Friday morning with the same desire to win. It was looking good on Friday, Aug. 29 2014 as they beat their first opponent, Eureka, 3-1. Junior Alexis Duehr had two assists to Junior Morgan Gibson and Abby Vogel to beat the St. Louis Eureka Hornets.
Duehr, a three year varsity player, said, “We were already down 1-0 in the first half and I passed it to Morgan and she drove it in. That was exciting because there was hope that we could stay with them and win.”
The Sequoits never gave up; they scored two more times.
“The third goal was on a corner and the ball came back to me and I passed it to Abby and she hit it in. It secured the win and it was a good way to start off the tournament,” Duehr said.
Things were looking good for the Sequoits until they met their match on Saturday, Aug. 30 when playing Casady from Oklahoma City. Abby Vogel’s assist to Shannon Zogran was not enough to beat the tough Cyclones. With a 5-1 loss, the Sequoits could only hope for a better game on Sunday. And that is what they got.
Playing St. Louis’ own Rosati Kain High School, defense turned out to be the key role as to why they won. Beating the ‘Kougars’ with an assist from Carly McCameron to Junior Kaleigh Miller the Sequoits won 1-0.
Miller, who never scored before said, “It was only my fourth game on varsity since this is my first year. It felt very good because it was the only goal of that game so it felt awesome. It felt like I did something to really help our team win.”
Rosati Kain was shut out thanks to sophomore Rebekah Cartlidge and with a helping hand defensively from both Erin Dampf and Melanie Sefranic.
The Sequoits looked strong as they placed 2nd in their pool.
The Sequoits first game since returning from St. Louis was against Lakes on Sept. 2 at Lakes.
