The 2014 boys soccer season was a memorable one, with the honoring of a fallen soldier and the breaking of a school record.

Heart is a characteristic that every team aims for. Andrew Wade is a fallen soldier in the United States Army who was a star player of the Antioch Community High School varsity soccer team in 2006. Wade is the definition of heart. Wade’s spirt is what pushed the boys varsity soccer team this season. This year, number 14 was retired in honor of Wade. The Sequoits wore his last name on the back of their jerseys with the colors red, white and blue during a game to honor his service in the military.

This season, ACHS won regionals, but lost in the first round of sectionals, falling short two games from last year when they made it to super sectionals. The Sequoits had a successful season and remind the ACHS students and staff why they look forward to soccer games. ACHS had many promising players on the team this year, such as seniors Iven Hernandez and Krystian Streit.

“I thought we had a fairly successful season. We were 5-1 in conference, which is the best we’ve done since I became coach seven years ago. We also won a regional championship which is never easy to do,” said varsity soccer coach Marni Polakow. “The talent is an obvious choice in what I’ll miss. We haven’t had this much talent come through Antioch in a very long time. The success we had last year and this year will also be missed. These boys played so hard to achieve all that they did, and I find amazing and love how much they love each other and how hard they work for each other.”

This season, Hernandez broke the school record for scoring the most goals, with 100 throughout his soccer career at ACHS.

“Unfortunately, we ended our season two games shy from last year. Other than that, we would have liked to go onto the state playoffs but at least we won a regional.  One thing I loved about this team is that we always knew how to have a good time even when times were bad. After the loss in regionals, instead of being upset, we started singing ‘Time Of Your Life’ by Green Day,” said Hernandez. ” I’m going to miss playing with this group of guys because I practically grew up and matured my game of play with them.”
