FAD Diets: Do they really work?
More stories from Anne Wagner
A fad diet is a diet that promises quick weight loss through what is usually an unhealthy and unbalanced diet. Some examples of these diets include high-protein diets, liquid diets, juice fasts and many more.
Although there are some benefits from these popular diets, they can do some damage as well. A leading researcher in fad diets is The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). Their research has shown many negatives about these fad diets.
“Many fad diets restrict or eliminate fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and whole grains. These foods are loaded with nutrients that are thought to help prevent many chronic conditions,” UPMC said.
Fad diets are really producing the loss of water weight, not the loss of fat that most people want out of it. Also, they run the risk of serious health conditions if not dealt with appropriately. There are many other, more safe diet strategies one person can take. For example trying to reduce portion sizes.
